Burma Road is one of the most important land routes to reach the mainland China.
On this road, there were a group of anti- fascist internationalist soldiers spent their youth in China, in Kunming, their casual shooting of photos are now become the most precious historical information.
In 1940, World War II has broke out in the southwest of China, facing the savage Japanese bombs, Jiang Jieshi commissioned the air force advisor Chen Nade, founded the American volunteer group, and finally obtained the support of President Roosevelt. At the end of 1940 to 1941, the United States helped China to win about 100 of the P-40 fighters, thereby approved the U.S. retired and reserve military personnel to the Chinese combat. A newspaper agency in Kunming describe the volunteer team plane as “Flying Tigers”.
The images for this exhibition come from a member of “flying tigers” — Earl Nash’s personal album.
, the author & photographers – Lun Sen and Bill Dibo are both Nash’s battle companion, there are lots of Bill’s images appearing in the album. Review these images, Yunnan had a huge change from those years.
In Nash’s album, there is a card he wrote to relatives:
Love will be like a bridge, wild as ocean
Love will let me stay here with you forever
Your son and brother
